Taking a step back to see the bigger picture

What I do at work when I’m bored…

There are times during the day at work when I have nothing to do. Rather than just stare off into space and drool (which I really love doing by the way), I try to keep myself busy with work-related tasks. For instance, I edit things that won’t go into a newscast, but still help me improve my editing skills.
This is once such example. If you watch KRON 4 News at all lately, you’ve no doubt seen the commercial for Lipozene. After seeing it countless times I decided to manipulate it, and turn it into a song. I threw in the video part for fun too. Hope you enjoy!

My first poem (for creative writing class)

So I decided to head back to school 11 years after graduating.
Not to get a new degree really, but to get my creative juices flowing again.
I signed up for a class at Skyline College in San Bruno, which is about 3 miles from my home.
The class is beginning with poetry, then moves to short stories, plays, etc.
It’s been a blast to be a student again. Never realized how much I would enjoy it!
And reading poetry, and writing for fun has really inspired me.
Although I’ve never claimed to be a poet, and likely won’t in the future, I decided to post my first poem here on the ol’ bloggywog.
I hope you enjoy, and please share your thoughts. Part of this class is learning how to share your writing with others and accept feedback.
Of course, since I do that for a living, you don’t have to worry about me breaking down and whining like a lost puppy. So… here it goes!
The Beggar

I watch him from the distance
His name I do not know
His face and eyes reflect the night
His age and sorrow show

He is a beggar for money
A coin from you he will ask
But his needs are not material
What he seeks comes in a flask

This man’s life started somewhere
His mother and father long gone
Did he ever have a family or friends?
Did he ever sing a song?

I watch him from the distance
I watch as fate unfolds
Tonight he will give not take
For I am the beggar of souls

Now, I know free-verse cataloging poetry is all the rage right now, but I’ve always been a sucker for the old fashioned lyrical rhyming stuff. So that was my goal with this one. I’ll do a long, Whitmanesque poem next time. I have to write two more for class.
